It was an impressive day for Mainland High School when the unranked Florida team took down American Heritage, ranked 63rd in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings.
Mainland got the game going with the sole touchdown of the first quarter. Then the second quarter got chaotic. The Buccaneers continued to shine offensively, marking 21 points, but Heritage came back with 30 points to take a 30-28 lead into the half.
The third quarter was the complete opposite. The defenses battled it out in a scoreless period.
Finally, Mainland broke through when Denzel Houston hit Will Collins for a 17-yard touchdown, giving the Bucs back the lead. Later in the quarter, Kyle Oliver returned a fumble recovery, giving Mainland the 42-30 lead that they closed the game up with.
Houston had a fantastic night out, completing 17-of-23 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns. On top of that, the sophomore carried the ball 15 times for 81 yards. Houston’s favorite target was Kaylo Hannah who caught six passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Wilfred Taylor added on five receptions to gain 101 yards and a score.
Aside from the second quarter, Mainland’s defense was flawless. Kevin McCrary had eleven combined tackles, six solos and five assists, three of which were for a loss of yards. The junior also recorded one sack.
Mainland now prepares to travel to Deltona for its next game on October 3. By continuing to pull of big wins like this, the Bucs look to make their way onto the rankings list.
